The
painting is Johann Ender's 'From
Darkness, the Light", 1831. The painting predates
by 34 years the conception of Statue of Liberty by Frederic
Bartholdi. It seems he copied everything from the deep
set eyes, to the mouth, nose and even the style of the
robe.

Bartholdi
even copied the genetic disorder called Morton's Toe.
It is when the second toe is longer than the big toe.
It occurs in 20% of people.. If that is not enough to
convince even the most cynical person then look at the
length of the robe and the straps on the sandals. As
you can tell, although tiberty's sandals are thincker
they appear to be nearly identical otherwise.
Liberty
was made older by a few years however so far as
I have been able to locate the earlier versions
that Bartholdi proposed were of a much younger
'Liberty' who looked much more like Johann Enders
model.

I
am an art buff (the son of a retired University art
professor) and I found the painting 'From
Darkness, the Light" on the day before
the airing of the episode of the 'The
Girls Next Door' when they visited the Statue of
Liberty. When I saw the painting I noticed the similarity
right away and the light bulb over my head turned on
'Ah ha that is where the sculptor found his model. That
was a bit plagiaristic so Bartholdi kept it a secret
and now people do a lot of guessing about who the model
was.'
Then
the next day when I saw the show and I decided that
was too much of a coincidence to ignore so I was inspired
to make these fun pages.
You
thought this was going to be about sex didn't you? Then
you are a very naughty girl and should write me a full
confession of all your dirty thoughts and ideas immediately
and mail it to me right away.
As
a counterpoint and contrast to my life as Thomas Jefferson
you might want to check out this
life when I was a Viking woman and might have become
a Playboy playmate if they had existed about 700+ years
ago. It's probably the reason I relate to Kendra, Holly
and Bridget's ideas.
So who was the model for John Enders painting? He only says in one of his books that she was a Ionian girl.
